What to Bring for a Comfortable and Safe Trip

Planning a trip to Senegal? Excellent choice! Whether you’re exploring Dakar’s bustling streets, relaxing at the Petite Côte, or venturing into the Lompoul Desert – packing right will make your journey much smoother.

As certified local tour guides, we at Blabacartours have seen it all – forgotten chargers, unsuitable shoes, and luggage bursting with the wrong clothes. So here’s your ultimate packing guide, based on real traveler experiences and local insight.

Clothing & Essentials

Senegal is warm year-round, but conditions vary by region. Dress light but smart:

  • Lightweight, breathable clothing – Linen and cotton are your friends.

  • Long-sleeved tops and pants – Ideal for the evening to avoid mosquitos.

  • Something modest – Especially for visiting religious or rural areas.

  • A light jacket – For cool desert nights or air-conditioned buses.

  • Closed, comfortable shoes – Great for walking tours or uneven streets.

  • Hat, sunglasses & sunscreen – The African sun is no joke.

Tip: Avoid all-black clothes – they attract heat and mosquitos!

Hygiene & Health

Travel healthy, stay happy:

  • Mosquito repellent (DEET-based or natural citronella)

  • Personal medication + basic first-aid (Band-Aids, Imodium, paracetamol)

  • Tissues or toilet paper – not always available in public restrooms

  • Hand sanitizer & wet wipes – always helpful on the road

  • Vaccination card – Yellow fever may be required depending on your entry point

  • Reusable water bottle – Stay hydrated & reduce plastic

Bonus tip: Pack oral rehydration salts in case of stomach issues.

Tech & Travel Gear

Don’t get caught uncharged or offline:

  • Universal travel adapter – Senegal uses plug types C, D, E, and K

  • Power bank – For long trips or remote areas

  • Local SIM card or eSIM – Cheap data and better WhatsApp connectivity

  • Camera or phone with enough storage – You’ll want to capture everything

  • Noise-canceling headphones – Ideal for flights or loud minibuses

Optional: A solar charger works well if you're off the grid for a day.

Bonus Items That Make a Big Difference

These often-forgotten items are worth their weight in gold:

  • Small notebook & pen – Great for journaling or trading info with locals

  • Phrasebook or translator app – While we speak your language, not everyone does

  • Foldable shopping bag – Useful for markets and souvenirs

  • Mirror & small towel – Especially if staying in eco-lodges

  • Luggage scale – Save stress at check-in

 What NOT to Bring

Let’s save space and hassle:

  • 🚫 Heavy winter clothes

  • 🚫 Expensive jewelry or flashy accessories

  • 🚫 Drone (unless you have a permit)

  • 🚫 High heels (beautiful but impractical)

  • 🚫 Too many books (go digital!)
